The last Earl of Cairnforth is born severely disabled, just days after the death of both his parents. He grows up unable to walk or feed himself. But his nature is affectionate and even cheerful, his expression sweet, and his intellect precocious. The Scottish locale is charming, the Earl's extensive property is wonderfully picturesque, and the Scottish tenants are industrious and forthright. The local minister, while not a brilliant preacher, is religious in the best sense and a thorough scholar. He becomes tutor to the Earl, and gives him the classical education considered de rigueur for a gentlemen.
In the early pages of the book, my eyes were misting over constantly, as are those of all the good people in charge of, or serving, the tiny Earl. Yet despite his physical helplessness, the Earl survives to live a life rich in love and friendship, visited by a modicum of disappointment and heartbreak -- and full of wise business decisions!
I read the excellent introduction with great interest. Craik was a strong woman who took on unconventional subjects in her fiction with skill and courage.
This may not be one of the great Victorian novels, but it's very good storytelling -- and a fascinating window into the sentimental and devout heart of the typical Victorian reader.

I enjoyed this story very much. It was not what I expected, but was a wonderful depiction of a beautiful life.
It is clean, uplifting, makes you want to meet the characters. The book is well written and a pleasure to read.
To live such a life, if only there were more like this, the world would truly be a better place. Many thoughts to ponder about the true goodness a life can make even with difficult circumstances. May we all aspire to have such impact!
For those familiar with Craik's other fictions, A Noble Life will certainly not disappoint with its competent if less than literary prose and pleasing if pedestrian plot. Although artistically lacking, A Noble Life is perhaps better than many more noteworthy Mid-Victorian novels in terms of providing a populist vision of the key social issues facing England in the middle of the nineteenth century. Through its main character, A Noble Life questions many of the most basic assumptions of nobility and power and evidences the hallmarks of a mid-century intellectualism that eventually led the Victorian age to become perhaps the most significant era of social transformation in England's history. Although largely forgotten by modern audiences and certainly overshadowed by other writers within the mid-Victorian period, Craik's novels never fail to stimulate the kind of intellectual introspection that we attribute to the best literary fiction.
This book was a bit slow moving (hence, took off a star), but it was an incredibly inspirational story about a man, left an orphan at 2 days old, who had all the wealth and position one could want, but was physically unable to do ordinary things. Since the story takes place in Scotland in the mid 19th century, there were few options to those born with severe disabilities. But Lord Cairnforth did not wallow in self pity or waste away his life. He used his brain (his mind being exceptional though his body useless) to make a difference in his world, and his faith in God never wavered.
